Giving you the freedom to focus on what matters most

Managing the needs of a disabled family member can be an exhausting, overwhelming process. But that needn’t be the case. With the right strategic approach, developing a comprehensive care strategy that meets their long-term financial needs can be a rewarding, stress-free experience.

Saving through strategic tax planning

Part of addressing those concerns means not only outlining a comprehensive care plan, but also leveraging support from critical government programs and obtaining the right strategic tax-planning advice. At Bright Future, we leverage a team approach using consultants, lawyers and accountants—all of whom are specialists in planning for people with disabilities—to provide solutions that include much more than just a will and a trust account. Case in point: Many people in the special needs community are giving the government thousands of dollars more in taxes than required, simply because they don’t understand the many deductions and credits at their disposal. But by following a few simple steps, people with disabilities and their supporting family members can access mechanisms such as the Disability Tax Credit—and for up to 10 years in the past, where they have not claimed the credit.

Ontario Disability Support Program: A lifeline for disabled Ontarians

People with either physical or developmental disabilities in Ontario may be eligible to receive benefits under the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP). The ODSP is administered by the Ministry of Community, Family and Children’s Services. This program, often called the Disability Pension, is available to people who are over 18 years of age and who meet a very closely regulated set of criteria. These rules surround issues of assets and income of the person with the disability and their medical condition. The purpose of this program is to provide a basic level of income, prescription drugs and dental care to adults with disabilities. It also provides some basic programs designed to encourage people with disabilities to enter into the workplace and to retain employment opportunities.
